Meet the Maker, Part 1: Chef Cameron Wells

Welcome to the first part of our Meet the Makers series! We take pride in the products that we create for patients and consumers and would like to introduce you to one of our chefs. Chef Cameron Wells is responsible for producing The Makery chews in Massachusetts. He recently took the time to answer a few questions about himself and his culinary journey.

What is your name and where are you from?

My name is Cameron Wells and I was born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Why did you want to become a chef?

I became interested in becoming a chef when cannabis was legalized in Breckenridge, CO in 2012. Like most people, I got the green rush fever in 2015 and fought my way into the industry by making cannabis chocolates and the rest is history.

Did you go to culinary school? If so, which one?

I did not go to culinary school, but I was trained on the job from chefs that came over from the casino industry. Las Vegas is one destination known for its culinary excellence and I was able to learn from extremely talented people in a highly competitive, real life environment.

Tell us about your culinary background?

My culinary background started in the chocolate industry by helping my sister start her own Paleo-friendly chocolate company that used honey as its primary sweetener. One day, in 2015, I had an epiphany and told her I was going to do whatever I could to learn how to put cannabis in her chocolate. From there, I moved to Massachusetts for 3 months to learn everything I could on how to make chocolate from scratch. I went back to Vegas and worked on my own dark chocolate recipe and after 8 long months of trial and error, it was ready. Several companies gave me a chance, based on my chocolate recipe, and that’s where it all began.

How did you make the decision to make edibles for cannabis consumers and patients?

I’ve always had a passion for cannabis and helping people is also something that drives me. The fact that cannabis was so inaccessible to everyone drove me crazy, so I decided to dedicate my life to bringing this wonderful plant to the people that need it.

What are your hobbies/interests outside of the kitchen?

I love sports and my favorite one is skiing. I went to school in Colorado not for academics, but to ski one of the best mountain ranges in the world. I also am a big music fan with Radiohead being my obsession for the past 20 years. I went to Austin City Limits last year, before everything went crazy, and it was one of the best music experiences I have had. I also love television and movies so when movies open up again, I will be first in line.

Favorite animal?

I’m a dog person so I would have to say German Shepard. They are very loyal and smart animals.

Favorite food?

In-and-Out burger. Whenever I fly home to Vegas a double-double with grilled onions and a hot pepper is the first thing I get.

Favorite food item to prepare at home?

I love breakfast, so I really enjoy making eggs benedict.
